The story of Bellanranta

Bellanranta in Kuopio has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a traditional industrial district into a modern hub of experiences. Our history is deeply rooted in Finnish boatbuilding craftsmanship and a strong spirit of entrepreneurship.

From industry to experiences

Bellanranta is where history meets the future. While the industrial heritage of Siikaniemi spans over a century, our story in its current form began with a crisis, bold choices, and a firm belief that old factory spaces could be breathed into new life.

For decades, the area served as the industrial heart of Bella-Veneet Oy. Local entrepreneur Raimo Sonninen built the company into one of the Nordics’ leading manufacturers of fiberglass boats. As production was streamlined and moved, or ownership structures changed, the vast industrial halls in Siikaranta were left partially vacant.

A diverse hub for tourism and leisure

A new chapter for Bellanranta began in 2016, when Raimo Sonninen together with Kuopio’s Director of Economic Development, Unto Juutinen, began reimagining the empty halls for leisure use. Since then, dozens of businesses have flourished in the area in rapid succession.

In 2019, the opening of Saana introduced an architecturally award-winning spa and restaurant, anchoring the shoreline as a premier travel destination. In 2023, the luxury expanded with the opening of Bella Lake Resort’s lakefront suites. The area has since been enhanced with an extensive park, featuring “The Swan”—a multi-part masterpiece by renowned sculptor Pekka Jylhä.

Today, Bellanranta is a cornerstone of Kuopio’s lake tourism vision, aiming to become an internationally recognized destination by 2030.
